Recent research has found that lower back pain can be effectively reduced through effective massage! In the March edition of Pain Medicine, a medical research journal, a team of researchers explored published literature to find out just how effective massage could be for treating lower back pain. Using data from the Kentucky Pain Research and Outcomes Study, these researchers scoured the published literature to find out all they could about pain, disability, and health-related quality of life for patients who suffered lower back pain. They then sent 104 patients for ten massage sessions with a licensed massage therapist, and took measurements of all the important factors before and after these massages.

The results? On all outcomes, the patients improved after receiving the massage! What was even more amazing is that 75% of massage recipients continued to show improvements up to four months after the research concluded, meaning that massage doesn’t just feel good now, it feels good on a lasting basis. The researchers were so impressed by these findings that they explored further into the area, and suggested that massage could be a very beneficial tool in managing the chronic pain in the lower back.
