As experts in professional massage services in New Jersey, the team at Essential Massage Therapy knows plenty about wellness and relaxation. While we personally choose massage first for our relaxation needs, we know that your relaxation toolkit needs a number of other elements to make it complete! This week, we’re going to focus on using the five senses to help you relax. When combined with a great massage from our massage office in Sparta, these tips can help you live a healthier, more balanced life.
The Basics of Mindfulness
The exercise we are about to suggest is one of mindfulness. While entire books have been written on the concept, we’ll give you the short version: Since ancient times, mindfulness, or the practice of being complete present and aware in the present moment, has been practiced by scholars, spiritualists, and medical professionals as a way to relax the body and mind. The goal is to simply exist and observe in a state free of judgment, freeing yourself from the traps of anxiety, depression, stress, worry, or fear. A great way to start is with the five senses activity!
The Five Senses Working for You
To relax and feel more mindful, find an object to focus on and dedicate a small amount of time (we suggest starting at 2 minutes and working up!) to focus just on this object. One of our favorite objects to use is an aromatherapy candle!
See. What does the object look like? Are the colors deep or light? Is the flame flickering? Does it cast a shadow or light up a room?
Touch. How does the object feel in your hand? Is there a texture? Is part of it warmer than another?
Hear. Is there any sound? Does your object rattle? Is the candle wick crackling gently?
Smell. What does the object smell like? (we like aromatherapy products for this as they help to add a relaxing smell). If not, what other smells are noticeable in the room?
Taste. Does your object have a flavor? Can you taste it? If not, what might it taste like? Our lavender aromatherapy candle would likely taste delicious.
Once you’ve finished exploring, check in with your body. Does it feel calmer? Are you more mindful and aware of your surroundings? You can start small, but some meditation and mindfulness experts practice for up to an hour! Find the time that fits best in your lifestyle and helps you relax the most.
